Barry Beach cleaners praise EU for single use plastic ban

Volunteers with Friends of Barry Beaches, who have spent the last eight years removing litter from Barry’s five main beaches, have welcomed the news that the European Parliament has voted for a complete ban on a range of single use plastic items in a bid to stop pollution of our oceans.

MEP’s have backed a ban on plastic cutlery and plates, plastic cotton buds, straws, drink stirrers and balloon sticks.
Chairman of Friends of Barry beaches, Rob Curtis, told Bro Radio:
“We welcome this news from the European Parliament, action on single use plastics is long overdue. The House of Commons and the Welsh Assembly seem to talk about action but never seems to deliver. We just hope that if we leave the EU our Government will follow with a similar ban in the UK.”
“Single use plastics are poisoning our oceans and killing our marine wildlife and the situation is getting worse by the day!”
