Barry duo to take on charity trek across Iceland for Cancer Research Wales

Two friends from Barry are set to undertake a charity challenge that will see them trekking across Iceland for Cancer Research Wales.

Michelle Hunt, aged 38 and Sarah Cayton aged 35, both from Barry will be accompanied by 20 others on the Icelandic Fire and Ice expedition which will take place in September this year.

The duo expects the trail to take 4 days to completed, covering distances of between 16km and 24km everyday, whilst sleeping in tents and campsites along the way.

Due to the geography of Iceland, the trek will vary from day to day with some days spent ascending extinct volcanoes and lava spills, where as others may involve walking along a diverse range of flat and undulating terrains.

The trek will also see them crossing rivers, walking over snow, weaving through woodlands and hiking over volcanic ash, which means the duo could be going from summer clothes to winter clothes in a matter of moments, but all with the aim of hitting their £5,000 target for Cancer Research Wales.

When asked why they decided to take up the challenge Michelle told Bro Radio “We know Cancer has touched everyone in some shape or form. My family has experienced more than most and this is the reason I am very passionate about this and want to raise money any way I can.”

“My Stepfather passed away at the age of 30. My Grandad at the age of 59 to prostate cancer. One of my best friends at the age of 36 2 years ago. My mum thankfully beat breast cancer and still has regular check ups.”

“What my family is going through at the moment has made me sign up now… my grandfather who is like a dad to me has been battling Myeloma for over 5 years. He is such a fighter and my hero – I want to make him proud and take on this challenge for him but also everyone else I have mentioned and for everyone who has lost someone or going through this now.”

“Sarah’s father has recently overcome cancer and I know this was a very hard time for her but with a happy ending! So when I mentioned the challenge she jumped at it.”

Michelle and Sarah also have booked a Reunion at Bar Cocoa in Barry on 5th April for all those who started at Comprehensive School in Barry between 1985 & 1995.

Tickets are just £10 with all money raised going to Cancer Research Wales.

Donations can also be made by texting MHSC77 and an amount to 70070.
