Barry Island welcomes visitors from far and wide

Council Leader Cllr John Thomas and Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan Cllr Janice Charles took time out of a civic event at Barry Island recently to welcome two community groups who had traveled a combined 200 miles for a day at the beach.

There to celebrate the success of the Council’s parks team in securing seven green flag awards for the Vale for a second successive year, the civic leaders gave two impromptu speeches to a Bangladeshi community group from Birmingham and the 1st Llandrindod Scout Group who were both enjoying a day at the Island.

The Ektu Onnorokom group had brought eight full coaches filled with around 400 of their members to the resort as part of a summer family fun day.

Cardiff based community activist and Bangla TV presenter Mokis Monsur was a guest speaker at the gathering.

He said: “The group go to different attractions across the country and I recommended they come to Barry Island as it is a great place for children and family alike. The family fun day had sports activities, a cultural function, prize ceremony, lunch and of course a lot of time was spent on the rides and the beach. We thought it would be a great day for everyone, and it really was!”

Cllr Thomas said:

“It is great to see that the hard work of our tourism and resort management teams pulls in visitors from all across the country. We can sometimes forget that not everyone has such easy access to the coast, and meeting people who had made a four hour round trip for their day at the beach was a reminder of just how lucky we are a first class seaside resort on our doorstep.”
