Barry Town Centre florists scoop innovation and excellence award

The owner of a Barry town centre florist has clinched an Innovation and Excellence Award as her business continues to flourish.

Wendy O’Connor runs Bluebells Florist on Thompson Street and has received the recognition for demonstrating forward thinking in her industry.

In the age of online shopping, Ms O’Connor’s store is an example of one that is performing well in the middle of town.

The Council is involved in a range of initiatives aimed at promoting Barry and other town centres across the Vale in an effort to maintain these areas as vibrant retail locations.

The annual Christmas lights switch-on event was held recently, featuring a market filled with gift ideas, food and drink, while this festive season also saw an open air cinema come to Central Park.

“Business is very good here. The feedback from customers is excellent,” said Ms O’Connor.

“The Council supports a number of town centre events throughout the year and tries to work with traders to boost business.

“The Christmas switch-on event was really good for us. We opened a bit longer because the trade was excellent. All these events help and it also helps if all the traders get involved and participate. Then we can help each other out.”

The Council is keen that shop owners work together towards a common aim of improving the town centre and has supported the creation of a traders group.

There is also the possibility of establishing a Business Improvement District in Barry, with traders considering whether this is something they want to pursue.

“The last meeting I went to about the BID, the gentleman there explained the concept really well and I found it much easier to understand after that,” added Ms O’Connor.

“I thought it was at least worth finding out about what’s going on and then deciding if it’s going to help the town.

“I think the Business Improvement District is definitely worth giving a go – anything that might help trade is.”
