Once upon a time, the call of the cuckoo heralded the start of Spring, but with meteorological Winter still with us until February 28, supermarket Aldi appears to have leapt a season and gone straight into Summer.
The cut-price chain is set to be the first supermarket of 2019 to stock punnets of fresh, British-grown strawberries.
According to a spokesperson, the strawberries, grown at Springfield Nursery near Cowbridge in a glasshouse, the first hand-picked punnets come even earlier than last year.
Although the traditional UK strawberry season doesn’t typically start for another two months (usually much closer to the official start of British Summer Time), Springfield Nursery hA been able to deliver these homegrown strawberries to Aldi thanks to ‘advancements’ in glasshouse technology.
Julie Ashfield, managing director of Corporate Buying at Aldi commented: “At Aldi, we know our customers look forward to the arrival of British strawberries as it signals the start of summer. We’re delighted to have brought this date forward to mark the start of spring. Aldi is 100 per cent committed to supporting British suppliers and it’s great to be the first grocer to offer hand-picked, British-grown strawberries this year.”
