Tŷ Hafan, the children’s hospice in Wales, is urging cyclists of all abilities to put their pedal power to its best use and saddle up for the ever popular Taff Cycle Challenge.
On Sunday 2nd September, the charity is staging its Superhero Cycle Challenge event and is asking its supporters to become a Tŷ Hafan superhero on two wheels.
“Despite having life-limiting conditions, the children and families we support possess the strength and courage akin to superheroes like Wonderwoman and Superman. So, to celebrate their unwavering determination, we’re asking our supporters to recruit their own teams of superheroes and be a part of the adventure for what promises to be a challenging and unforgettable experience”, said Jodie Harris, Event Manager at Tŷ Hafan.
Tŷ Hafan is offering two routes for the Taff cycle challenge. Both routes will end in Cardiff, but the 41km route starts in Merthyr Tydfil and the longer 79km route begins in Brecon. This means that the route can be completed either by groups who just want a leisurely pedal, or by keener cyclists who want to push themselves and achieve a set target.
Funds raised from the challenge will help families like Andrew and Jen Evans from Cardiff. Their little boy, Oscar, died aged just two and a half from a rare genetic condition. Before he died, Andrew and Jen brought Oscar to Tŷ Hafan on several occasions where the family were offered care, comfort and support. Now, the family regularly raise much needed funds so the charity can help others just like them.
“We are part of the Tŷ Hafan family now. We will never forget what they have done for us and will continue to raise funds in Oscar’s memory so they can help more families like ours”, said Andrew.
“We can’t thank Ty Hafan enough for what they have done for us. It is vitally important for people to fundraise for Ty Hafan so that they continue to provide amazing care for life-limited children and their families”, he added.
Jodie explained: “Every year, more and more families are turning to us for support, care and comfort. So, as our superheroes proudly fly each mile, they’ll know that they are helping us to raise the £4million annual running costs of our children’s hospice, which enables us to provide our services to children and families from across Wales”.
She continued: “Of course, successfully completing the challenge is only half of your adventure. We are asking you to become a Tŷ Hafan superhero for us and that means aiming to raise a minimum of £300 per team for full Taff participants and a minimum of £200 per team for half Taff participants, to allow us to keep running the hospice for our own heroes, the Tŷ Hafan families”.
People signing up for the challenge will be able to download a fundraising kit, a training schedule and an equipment list from the Tŷ Hafan website, and all superheroes will receive a Superhero Cycle Challenge t-shirt, medal and team goody bag for use during the event.
