Barrybados receives nomination for Vale of Glamorgan Responsible Business Champion

Barry based business, Barrybados has been nominated by MP Alun Cairns for the 2018 National Responsible Business Champion.

The scheme which was created by the All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group (APCRG) first launched in 2015, with the judging panel selecting the Business Champion from nominations made by local MP’s.

Barrybados which was first started by Louis Ross and Rhys Howell in 2013, initially launched with the aim of helping to promote and create tourism for the town of Barry, with a range of Barrybados themed merchandise which has now been seen around the world.

More recently, Barrybados Co-Creator Louis Ross opened up the Beach Hut Gift Shop on Barry Island, giving the Barrybados brand its first permanent base on the tourist destination.

Barrybados merchandise has made its way around the world including the USA, Australia and Cambodia.

When asked about opening the new venture Louis said: “Opening the shop was the next step, we’d been online for a while, but our main customer base are local people from Barry and tourists who enjoy the novelty of the brand.”.

“The shop gives easy accessibility, as we’re open every day. Plus we stock a number of local independent businesses too. But you’d be surprised how much we send around the UK to the most random of places, and Australia seems to be our second most popular destination outside of the UK.”

The APCRG will now look through nominations by MP’s to choose an overall winner, whom will be chosen on criteria which includes how the business supports the local community, invests in healthy workplaces, offers apprenticeships and training, workes to reduce their environmental impact and works with suppliers and SMEs to support responsible business practice.

On finding out about his nomination Co-Creator Louis Ross said “I’m quite shocked, I took a call this morning, I didn’t know anything about it until then. I’m humbled, to be nominated by the people of Barry is just amazing”.

He continued to say “I was told our nomination was because we had made small changes such as moving to paper bags, cutting off tags of products to reduce waste, offering a free delivery service, excellent customer service and promotion of Barry amongst other things.”

Previous winners of the APCRG Responsible Business Champion include Zurich Insurance, Alun Griffiths (Contractors) and London City Airport.

Alun Cairns MP will recognise Barrybados locally for their work as and a representative from the company will be invited to attend the annual Responsible Business Champions reception at Westminster on July 4th at which the APCRG National Responsible Business Champion award will be presented.
