New nature group launched to make a stand for nature

BY: Nathan Spackman

A new nature conservation group is about to be launched dedicated to protecting and increasing the amount of green spaces and wildlife in the town of Barry and its surrounding areas. The group will combine campaigning and voluntary action and will be the first Barry wide dedicated wildlife conservation group.

This volunteer conservation group will be strictly non-political, whose sole aim will be the protection and conservation of nature in the Barry and district area. We will hold monthly action events where our volunteers will erect nest/bat boxes, plant trees, reporting wildlife crime, carrying out bio-blitzes and community litter picks.

We will also aim to hold local, regional and national government to account for their actions locally concerning nature. We hope to work with the local Councils in order to make Barry a greener more nature friendly place and so benefitting both local wildlife and residents. Annual membership will be just £3-00!

We are delighted that the Welsh Naturalist and Spring Watch co-presenter Iolo Williams has agreed to speak at the launch event.

Founder of Barry Action for Nature, Rob Curtis, told the press:

"News report after news report are all telling us how desperate the situation has become for our local Welsh wildlife. I hope the people of Barry will now do their bit to stand up for nature by joining this vital conservation group centerred on one of Wales' largest towns.

Barry has a proud industrial past but I hope it will have a greener and more wildlife centered future. From protecting and increasing our street tree numbers to ensuring our parks and road verges are pollinator and wildlife friendly, we can drastically improve Barry's attraction for wildlife.

I am really honoured that Iolo Williams has agreed to speak at the launch. He is one of most well known and dedicated ambassadors for Welsh wildlife."

The official launch of “Barry Action for Nature” will be taking place on Friday 17th of August 2018 at the Forest Lodge, Porthkerry Park, Barry starting at 11am. Tickets are free and will be available for all those interested in joining the group but space will be limited so please contact Rob Curtis on 01446 736287 or 07855329942 for tickets.
