An established Barry business is to cease trading after 127 years in Barry after it was unable to secure a new location.
The owners of Silver Star DIY, which is also known as Sylvester’s and is based on Subway Road made the announcement on their Facebook page on Tuesday (26th) afternoon.
It comes after it was recently announced that Associated British Ports (ABP) were to sell the land on Subway Road to a local housing association, who are expected to demolish the existing buildings to create affordable housing on the land.
An application for the demolition of the existing buildings and erection of 72 affordable housing units, cycle bicycle store, waste store, surface level car park and associated works is set to go to the Vale of Glamorgan Council Planning Committee on Thursday.
In a post on their Facebook page, the owners thanked their loyal staff, customers and friends who they have had the pleasure of meeting over the years.
Joint Managing Director Jemima Eason (was Sylvester) told Bro Radio that the decision was Devastating for the family and for the people of Barry.
She continued by saying “I’ve been an advocate of ‘shop local’ for so many years in the hope that people realise that unless they use the business and facilities around them, they will eventually close”
“In our case, it’s a number of factors that have contributed to this decision. With such a long history in the town, its going to be very sad to walk away.”
The family say the business will continue to trade until Sunday 31st March 2019, with members of the public invited to grab some final bargins.
