Spinning a good yarn to mark Hospice Care Week at Marie Curie

A group of keen knitters from Barry has helped a Penarth hospice mark the start of Hospice Care Week – by Yarn Bombing its gardens!

The Barry Hookers joined community fundraiser Hannah Leckie at the Marie Curie Cardiff and the Vale Hospice on Sunday night, to secretly decorate the gardens with yellow wool to mark the charity’s colours as a surprise to the staff and patients.

The aim was to Go Yellow for Hospice Care week, which takes place from October 8 to 14, and sees organisations talk about the extraordinary work that hospices do at the heart of their communities, and invite supporters to get involved by volunteering, donating and showing they care.

This year’s themes are Heart my Hospice and Go Yellow.

The Marie Curie Cardiff and the Vale Hospice provides round-the-clock expert care and support to people with a terminal illness, and their families.

The charity also provides a Hospice at Home service across Cardiff and the Vale, and also has a team of clinical nurse specialists (CNS) across the Vale who support people diagnosed with a terminal illness in their own homes with symptom management, information and advanced care planning.

Fi Rogers of the Barry Hookers said: “We were very pleased to be asked to support the team here at the Marie Curie Cardiff and the Vale Hospice to mark Hospice Care Week

Hannah added: “We wanted to do something which would have a lovely impact for staff coming in to work for the start of Hospice Care week, and for patients and families to enjoy throughout the week.

“The wool has added some brightness to the garden in Autumn.”

Hospice manager Sarah Lloyd-Davies added: “The support we receive from our local communities is fantastic, and we thank the group for giving their time to create these beautiful pieces and help decorate our gardens with them.”
