Vere street stalwart "Steve's Barbers" is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week. Stephen Cleaver, the shop owner, started cutting hair all the way back in 1992 under the tutelage of the legendary John Asprou and son. He served a five year apprenticeship and worked for a further two years before deciding, with the help of his father and the late Anastasis Asprou, to go it alone, and set up his own shop in the Cadoxton area.
The shop opened on the 4th October 1999 and was the only barbers in Cadoxton at the time. These days it is a bright and vibrant barbershop, full of nostalgia inducing toys and memorabilia from the 80s, including Star Wars and WWF action figures.
When I spoke to Steve about this Milestone he said;
"In the last twenty years, the shop has gone through a few changes, had a few employees and trainees ,and a lot of customers, some of whom are still regulars to this day! It's to these, and all my customers old and new that I'm thankful and very grateful that my business is still going strong. I think maybe the haircuts have something to do with it too haha!
When I opened on that first day in 1999, I never thought I would still be here twenty years later. How time flies and scissors snip, onto the next twenty."
Steve will be celebrating the anniversary by cutting the hair of his 20th customer today free of charge!
