Vale farmers take their “cows on tour”

Farmers from across the Vale of Glamorgan have taken to the road to give local schoolchildren an insight into the agricultural industry.

On Thursday 19th July – NFU Cymru held a “Cows on Tour” event at Roath Park Primary School in Cardiff – where pupils had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities.

Dairy farmer Abi Reader – of Goldsland Farm in Wenvoe – gave a demonstration of how cows are milked – while there were also opportunities to make burgers and butter.

South Wales Central AM Andrew RT Davies – who still runs the family farm in St Hilary – attended the event – and said it provided children with the perfect opportunity to become more familiar with the source of their food.

Mr Davies said, “Our country would not function without a thriving agricultural industry – since it is vital to produce the food we need.

“But understandably – it can often be difficult for children to understand where their food comes from.

“This initiative from NFU Cymru is a great idea – giving pupils a hands on experience of everything from milking a cow to making burgers.

“It was a pleasure to join Abi and other farmers from across the Vale in taking part – and it was excellent to see the pupils so enthusiastic.

“I’d like to thank everyone at NFU Cymru for their work in putting the event together – and staff and pupils at Roath Park Primary School for giving me such a warm welcome.”
