YMCA Barry ‘ecstatic’ after two gymnasts are selected for Wales in Australia

YMCA Barry gymnasts Josh Cook and Iwan Mepham will be heading for the Gold Coast, Australia, in April to take part in the Commonwealth Games!

They were on the ‘long list’ to represent Wales and, last year and this, Josh and Iwan have had to undergo many trials around Britain to demonstrate they have the potential to score high enough to be selected.

They competed in their final Commonwealth Games trial in February during the Welsh Championships in Cardiff. All the male gymnasts on the Commonwealth long list competed over two days, day one being the senior men’s Welsh Championships.

This competition came with excellent results, with Iwan becoming the Welsh rings champion. Josh went on to become the Welsh high bar and parallel bar champion as well, and at just 17 Josh became the overall senior Welsh champion.

On the second day of competition both Josh and Iwan posted some excellent scores, with Iwan claiming the parallel bar title.

Scores from the Commonwealth trials were then put together for the national coaches and Sport Wales to decide if a team would be travelling to Australia, and who would be successful in gaining a place in the team.

YMCA Barry Gymnastics Club were ecstatic that Josh and Iwan were selected for the Welsh team. This is a fantastic achievement to have two members of YMCA Barry representing Wales in the highest level competition.

Congratulations to Josh Cook, Iwan Mepham and coach Pete Haysham for all your hard work and dedication throughout their journey to this year’s Commonwealth Games.

Josh, Iwan and Pete will travel to Australia with the rest of Team Wales at the end of March. Good luck to all of the Welsh team!
