YMCA Barry are delighted with the current success of their male competitive gymnasts at the Welsh Apparatus Challenge Cup & Welsh Preparation, Club and Elite Grade Championships.
Ethan Williams, Harvey Burton – Slocombe and Thomas Compton had been training in the competitive squad for less than a year and participated in their first six apparatus competition - The Welsh Apparatus Challenge Cup. All three boys performed excellently and extremely maturely for their first competition of this nature. Ethan became the Under 10’s Welsh Novice Champion with 1st on Rings, 2nd on Parallel Bars and 2nd on High Bar. In the Under 12’s Welsh Novice competition Harvey secured 4th Overall as well as a 3rd place on High Bar and Tom claimed 5th Overall and 3rd on Parallel Bars. A fantastic achievement for the three boys.
Within the Welsh Preparation Grades, eight year old Reuben Burns competed to an extremely impressive level. The preparation grades are designed to start those gymnasts with the potential to become elite gymnasts and focus their training on their elite development. Reuben became the Welsh eight year old champion on the Pommel Horse, Parallel Bars, High Bar, Physical Preparation as well as securing the Overall Welsh Champion title by over four marks from the gymnast in second place. Reuben also significantly achieved the highest overall score from any gymnast in all ages and categories over the weekend. This again was a wonderful achievement for Reuben.
Moving onto Club Grades, within Club Grade 1, Bradley Thomas performed excellent routines after coming back to gymnastics after injury and secured 4th on Parallel and 4th on Physical Preparation and demonstrated great improvement across all apparatus. Cobie Phillips became the Welsh Champion on the Pommel Horse, Parallel Bars, Physical Preparation as well as becoming the Overall Welsh Club Grade 1 Champion.
Within the Club Grade 2 Category, Martins Kononovs secured 4th on Pommel Horse, 3rd on Rings and 2nd on Vault, demonstrating great strength and skill. Zhao Kai Wilcox became the Welsh Champion on the Pommel Horse, High Bar, Physical Preparation as well as becoming the Club Grade 2 Overall Welsh Champion.
Samuel Attwood competed with great maturity and character within the Club Grade 3 competition, securing 3rd on Floor, 3rd Rings, 2nd Vault as well as becoming the Physical Preparation Welsh Champion. Collectively, Sam achieved 4th Overall.
In the Elite Level 2 category, Jacob Watkins became the Welsh Champion on Floor, Vault, Physical Preparation which resulted in Jacob claiming 2nd in the Overall category. A brilliant achievement in a very challenging and demanding competition.
YMCA Barry are extremely proud of these achievements, congratulations to all of the gymnasts who competed as well as the boys personal coaches Bradley Haysham and Gareth Slocombe. The results have also meant that Cobie Phillips, Zhao Kai Wilcox, Sam Attwood and Jacob Watkins have qualified to represent Wales at the British Club and Elite Grade Championships next month. A big good luck to the four boys!
