A 16-year-old boy has died after getting into difficulty while swimming with friends below a waterfall in County Durham.
The teenager, from Hartlepool, was in the deep pool beneath the waterfall on Tuesday evening when he got into trouble.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 8pm.
Police officers, fire crews and a mountain rescue team were involved in a search of the river.
Durham Police said the boy was found two hours later and airlfted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he died.
Five other teenagers – three boys and two girls – who were with him, were not injured.
