Barry Town Mayor Officially Opens Cemetery Approach Community Centre

Barry Town Mayor, Cllr Margaret Wilkinson officially opened the new community centre on Cemetery Approach yesterday in the final civic event of her mayoral term.

The Barry Town Council building had a difficult birth, with the centre nearing completion way back in September 2019, before an arson attack forced a total rebuild. During this second phase of construction, Willis Construction Limited, the group in charge of the project, had to contend with the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking back in July 2020, following the completion of the build, Barry Town Mayor, Margaret Wilkinson, said:

“It is with great pleasure that Barry Town Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council can now announce the completion of the new Community Building at Cemetery Approach, a key asset built for the community and for our future generations to enjoy.

“This building is the icing on the cake, sitting adjacent to the beautiful park already in place.”

Now, after months of waiting due to coronavirus restrictions, the Town Mayor was able to finally open the building, which will be available to hire birthday parties, wakes, family gatherings, meetings, events, training and local community group meetings.

In a post on the Barry Town Mayor Facebook account, Cllr Margaret Wilkinson said of the occasion:

“Today I had the extreme pleasure of fulfilling my final Civic event of my Mayoral term. I opened the new Barry Town Council building, Cemetery Approach Community Centre. It is a lovely, up to date space and was my honour to open it.”

Upon the completion of the project back in July 2020, Councillor Neil Moore, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council said:

“We have worked in partnership with Barry Town Council over a number of years to transform what was a dilapidated, rundown area into something the local community could enjoy and be proud of.

“The latest stage of that plan involved building a facility containing amenities and storage space, which we hope will be of further benefit to those that use the area.”
