The Barry Town United Development Team, who have been named as champions of the Cymru Premier Development League South.
Following consultation with member clubs, the FAW National Leagues Board have confirmed that the 2019/20 season for both North and South divisions has been curtailed, with the final league tables to be updated using the ‘points per game’ model, for those matches that have not yet been played.
The Barry Town development side had five games of the league season left to play before football was brought to halt, but sat eight points clear at the top of the table, meaning they have been declared champions.
With 14 wins and one draw from 15 games played, it has been an incredible campaign for the team. They also made history in reaching the semi-final of the FAW Youth Cup.
Samuel Roberts topped the team’s goalscoring charts with 13 strikes, followed by Mervyn Bennett with 10. All appearances and goals will still stand and shall be recorded for historical records.
Meanwhile, Gavin Chesterfield has handed senior debuts to Jack Pascoe, Lathan Garrett and Alex Brookes-Bent this season, while Sam Jacobsen has been included in the first team squad.
Speaking about winning the league, lead Development Team coach Pete Fordham said:“Receiving the news that we have won the league was fantastic to hear. To go unbeaten this late in the season, with only five games remaining is a reflection of the quality of the squad.
“The players’ attitude and application has been exceptional throughout the season and they have shown a real togetherness. It was pleasing to have three players make their first team debut and seeing them develop.
“Of course, this wasn’t the way we intended to finish the season, however we completely understand the decision. Being crowned champions is nothing less than what the players deserve.”
