A controlled explosion was undertaken today at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg, after a chemical was identified in the Science Department as being of potential harm to pupils and staff.
The schools headteacher Hywel Price confirmed the news in a letter to parents on Monday, on what would have been the first day of school for many pupils since March,.
In the letter he said "I wish to confirm that the Bomb Disposal Unit conducted a controlled explosion on the site of Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg at 2'o clock today (07/09/2020)."
"A chemical in the Science Department was identified as being of potential harm to pupils and staff of the school."
"Following correspondence with South Wales Police and the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the Bomb Disposal Unit was sent to the school and decided to conduct the controlled explosion on the land which is presently part of the new construction site."
"The allocated site was a very safe distance from pupils, staff and the community."
"One teaching block was closed between 11:45 and 14:00. Pupils and staff were allocated to their classrooms."
"I wish to thank everybody for their calmness and maturity whilst dealing with this incident."
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has been approached for comment.
