Cardiff and the Vale University Health Board have announced that they will be extending the walk-in sessions for the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine at the Bayside Mass Vaccination Centre to run until Sunday 6th June due to popularity, with more than 1,500 people attending over the bank holiday weekend.
The vaccination centre, which is located within the former Toys”R”Us building, was open from Thursday 27th May to Monday 31st May, 8:30am – 7:30pm, for members of the public to walk in and receive their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. This was largely aimed at those over 18 who had, for whatever reason, not yet been invited to attend a vaccination centre, but anyone was welcome to attend.
Now, the health board has shared the news that they will continue to offer this service throughout this week, up until Sunday 6th June, remaining open for anyone to attend who has not yet received their first dose. Both the Oxford-Astrazeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines will be in use at the centre.
Sharing the news of the extension, Cardiff and the Vale UHB said in a post on social media:
“More than 1,500 people have already attended our COVID-19 Vaccine First Dose Walk-in sessions at Bayside Mass Vaccination Centre.
“Due to their popularity, we’re extending the sessions to run until this Sunday 6 June.”
Ahead of opening the service to the public over the bank holiday weekend, Tracy Meredith, Head of Operations for Testing and Mass Immunisations at the Health Board said:
“The vaccine is still our best defence against COVID 19 and we would encourage anyone who is eligible to receive their vaccine to please get it. We have invited all of our adult population to attend but are aware there will be some people that have been missed as we perhaps did not have up to date contact details or they opted out at the start of the programme.
If you haven’t had your vaccine, please come and see us at Bayside MVC this weekend as it is the best way to protect yourselves, your loved ones and the local community. Depending on demand there may be queues so please dress appropriately for the weather and our team will get you through as quickly and safely as possible.”
