Community Spirit is higher in Wales than anywhere else in the UK

New research by the Eden Projects Big Lunch in Wales, reveals that community spirit is higher in Wales than any other part of the UK, with many people in Wales stating they feel closer to their community and neighbours as a result of the pandemic.

As the Eden project launches its Big Lunch in Wales today, the Survey reveals that 3 in 5 people in Wales feel anxious or apprehensive about socialising without restrictions, but community spirit remains higher in Wales than most parts of the UK.

The survey was conducted by OnePoll for The Big Lunch, a National Lottery and Iceland Foods supported initiative. Further results reveal that:

  • 66% of people in Wales are worried about visiting crowded places, and despite being known for our ‘cwtch’, over half (52%) of people in Wales don’t feel confident about hugging when restrictions are lifted.
  • The research conducted in April 2021, discovered that despite a high level of anxiety, 71% of the population of Wales are comfortable meeting smaller groups locally for picnics or community BBQs, great news for The Big Lunch 2021!

The Big Lunch is an idea by the Eden Project and made possible by the National Lottery and Iceland Foods. Last year, over 165,000 people in Wales took part in the first ‘Virtual Big Lunch’ in Wales, meeting neighbours and people from their community online, on the phone or over the garden fence. BBC’s Apprentice winner Alana Spencer from Aberystwyth, also joined in and led a live bake along.

TV presenter and comedian Jo Brand, has been a Big Lunch Ambassador for five years. She can relate to the survey findings: “Whilst I’m chomping at the bit to see family and friends again; I certainly won’t be front of the queue dishing out hugs when my local rave club reopens. If anyone is feeling anxious about diving back into the socialising pool, The Big Lunch is the perfect way to dip a toe back in the shallow end. Fling open the door and wave an egg vol-u-vaunt over the back fence during a natter with the neighbours. We need to remember how to talk to real-life humans again, so why not start with the human beings next door?”

This year’s Big Lunch is focused on a summer of community, friendship and fun, kicking off on the 5th of June and running throughout the month to allow people to join in when they are ready. The Eden Project Communities Team in Wales are encouraging the people of Wales to join in however and whenever works for them.
