The Vale Council's Cabinet has backed plans to increase the capacity of Ysgol Y Deri and construct a new school building in Cosmeston, to meet future demand for special education in the County.
In a report presented to Cabinet on Monday 8th February, Councillors were advised on the outcome of the consultation exercise undertaken.
The Council received 102 responses to the consultation, in which consultees were asked to indicated whether they "support", "do not support" or "have no opinion" on the proposal.
Of those 102 respondents, 90 were in favour of the proposal, 11 were opposed and 1 stated no opinion either way.
The proposal sets out to increase the Capacity of Ysgol Y Deri to accommodate an additional 150 pupils; and construct a new school building on the preferred site located in Cosmeston, Penarth for September 2023 which would operate as an additional site under the management of YYD.
The expansion will take place on land next to the proposed Upper Cosmeston Farm development, with 75% of the £11 million project cost to be funded by the Welsh Government if proceeded.
Some of the concerns highlighted in response to the proposal were the increase in local traffic, loss of green space and that need to spread out ALN provision within the Vale.
Following the consultation period, the Council's Cabinet unanimously approved plans to progress the proposals further.
