Vale businesses nominated for 'Curry Oscars'

23rd November 2021

Two Vale food businesses have been nominated in this year's British Curry Awards.

Barry's Tiffin Rasoi is up for Best Takeaway while Penarth's Mint and Mustard has made the Welsh shortlist for Best Restaurant.

The winners will be announced in a glittering ceremony at London's Battersea Park next Monday.

Tiffin Rasoi, based on Holton Road in Barry, is inspired by the street food of India and ‘dabbawalas’ - the tiffin tin carriers who use Mumbai’s famed local railway to deliver home cooked meals across the city.

They've thanked customers for their ''great support and continued custom'', after being shortlisted for Best Takeaway/Delivery UK 2021.

Mint and Mustard, located on Windsor Terrace in Penarth, describe their offering as ''inspired by the Keralan philosophy of fresh, light and healthy food created with passion and care for the ingredients we use.''

''We have always had a “slow food” approach – cooking each dish fresh every time and using only pure, natural colours and flavours.''

The owners of Mint and Mustard also run another restaurant in Cardiff.

This year's awards, nicknamed the 'Curry Oscars', will also feature tribute to industry colleagues who have passed away during the pandemic.

Organisers say they have received a record number of public nominations.

The event's founder, businessman Enam Ali, said: ''It gives me great joy that, after the challenges of the last 18 months, my industry friends in the UK curry fraternity and public figures will unite once again in person at the home of the British Curry Awards to celebrate the nation’s favourite curry houses while also recognising the issues we, as an industry and as a nation, have faced during the pandemic.''

''Testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the cross-generational migrant community that comprises the UK’s curry industry, we have come back ever more determined to serve curry lovers up and down the country, continuing to take on all challenges head on and ensure the industry continues to thrive once again.''

The awards, now in their 17th year, will be held at Evolution London and sponsored by Just Eat.
