The Vale of Glamorgan Council has agreed new measures to address the issue of problem parking in six hotspots.
In recent weeks, there have been persistent issues with people parking in certain areas, often when visiting outdoor spaces, leading to overcrowded streets and vehicles causing inconvenience for local residents.
There have even been reports of the congestion hampering the progress of emergency vehicles.
To tackle this matter, the Council is proposing the introduction of new resident parking schemes in parts of Barry Island, Ogmore-by-Sea, The Knap, Cosmeston, Cowbridge and Llandough.
Discussions will take place shortly with the residents of these affected areas on options for residential parking, which could see Parking permits free of charge to the residents of the streets affected with anyone parking their car in these areas without the requisite permit facing possible enforcement action.
Council officers will patrol these areas and issue Fixed Penalty Notices to anyone not abiding by the new regulations.
Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said: “I’m aware of a number of streets around the Vale that are subject to considerable amounts of displaced parking from visitors and have been for a number of years. This can cause problems for residents seeking access to their properties as well as impacting traffic flows and highway safety.
“My cabinet colleagues and I have responded to the concerns raised by agreeing new measures aimed at addressing the residential parking problems at a number of key locations in the County.
“If the residents in these areas are in agreement we would look to introduce residents parking schemes to these areas, as soon as legally possible, making it an offence to park there without a permit and instruct our enforcement officers to take action against anyone who does not abide by these regulations.”
If the implementation of restrictions in the six initial priority areas is agreed and proves to be a success, the measures could be extended to other areas of the Vale.
