Vale Council marks Baby Loss Awareness Week

The Western Shelter at Barry Island will be illuminated in pink and blue lights from the 9th to the 15th of October to support Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Baby Loss Awareness week takes place every year and is an opportunity for bereaved parents, their family and friends to unite with others and commemorate their babies lives.

There are a number of charities and organisations who offer support to those affected by pregnancy or baby loss. This awareness campaign is an opportunity for them to unite, pay their respects and fundraise for vital research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth.

On 15 October those who’d like to take part are encouraged to join a ‘Wave of Light’ by lighting a candle at 7pm and leaving it burn for an hour to remember all babies who have died.

Baby Loss Awareness Week is organised by the Baby Loss Awareness Alliance, led by stillbirth and neonatal death charity, Sands. The alliance is a collaboration of more than 90 charities working together to break the silence around infant loss and to drive improvements in the care and support offered to anyone affected by the loss of a baby.

Cllr Ben Gray, Cabinet member for health and social care, said: “We hope that seeing an iconic location in the Vale lit in pink and blue will spark more conversations about baby loss.

“It is estimated that 1 in 4 pregnancies in the UK end in loss during pregnancy or birth. This is a tragedy that affects thousands of people every year but is not widely known. Supporting causes like Baby Loss Awareness Week is vitally important to provide bereaved parents and families with an opportunity to talk about their experience and fundraise for the charities that have supported them.”
