53 people wanted for various crimes have been arrested in a South Wales Police operation.

Eleven people have since been charged following the first of three so-called days of action as part of Operation Chirk.

The force is targeting long-term suspects wanted for a variety of offences including domestic violence, assault, witness intimidation and firearm possession.

The oldest of the crimes dated back to last April.

More than 80 officers took part in the first day of action across the region on September 25th.

Chief Inspector Jamie Holcombe from South Wales Police said: "The intention of Operation Chirk is to reduce the number of outstanding suspects with positive disposal outcomes."

“We need to ensure investigations are of the highest standard, allowing for efficient progress through the justice system to achieve the best outcomes, whilst continuing to provide an enhanced service to victims."

“As with last year, a significant number of arrests under Operation Chirk were made possible due to the combined effort of colleagues and a determination relentlessly to pursue criminals, bringing them to justice.”

Of those arrested on the first day of action, 12 people were remanded in custody, 22 were released on bail, two were released under investigation and two more were subject to community resolution.

Four more people were released with no further action taken.
