Airport 'surprised' as Icelandic airline cancels flights

Play Airlines

Cardiff Airport chiefs have told Bro Radio News they're surprised after an Icelandic airline cancelled some of its upcoming flights.

Play Airlines is set to launch twice-weekly services between the Rhoose airport and Keflavik later this week.

They're due to run on a short-term basis until 20th November - but it's emerged the airline has already cancelled some flights next month because of technical issues involving aircraft.

Cardiff Airport is advising passengers booked on affected flights to contact the airline directly.

But according to the airport's chief executive, Play are still planning to operate eight direct flights between Cardiff and Keflavik airports this month.

The first is scheduled for this Thursday - on the eve of Wales' latest Nations League game in Iceland.

Spencer Birns, Cardiff Airport's CEO, said: "We are surprised and disappointed that PLAY Airlines has cancelled some seasonal flights between Wales and Iceland next month (November 2024)."

"We have been informed that this is due to an aircraft technical issue and this has unfortunately affected the planned schedule."

"We appreciate this is disappointing for our customers, however there is an option to rebook as the airline is still planning to operate eight direct flights between Cardiff and Keflavík Airport in October."

Play Airlines announced the direct short-term route back in April, along with the option for passengers to connect to four destinations in the United States - including New York and Boston - as well as Toronto in Canada.

At the time, Play's chief executive Einar Örn Ólafsson said: "I am confident that our Cardiff route will be well received. We boast a world-class on-time performance of 83% in 2023, the youngest aircraft fleet in Europe, and our cabin crew was voted the best by the readers of USA Today 10Best."

"Those who choose to fly with us will have a safe, reliable, and enjoyable travel experience to their destination."

Bro Radio News has contacted Play Airlines for a response.
