The Barry Bike Club is restarting sessions from next week after it secured renewed funding for 2025.
Vale of Glamorgan Council says the free sessions have been made possible by a successful Shared Prosperity grant from the UK Government, secured by its community investment and active travel teams.
They'll be held every Tuesday throughout the spring and summer - starting from 1st April - at Iolo Park on Treharne Road between 4pm and 5.30pm.
Mark Ellis, a community investment and involvement officer at Vale Council, said: "Having been involved in this project since the beginning, I am delighted that the Vale Housing Community Investment team along with the Active Travel team have been successful in receiving Shared Prosperity funding once more."
“The children attending really enjoy Bike Club and it’s great to see their confidence grow in learning to ride a bike as they attend the sessions."
The Bike Club was first launched in 2014 as part of the former Communities First programme, but was stopped five years later due to a lack of funding.
It was revived in 2023 in partnership with Pedal Power - the Cardiff-based bike charity - with its officers promoting and running the weekly sessions.
The club use targeted cycling support to promote physical activity to local young children and tackle health inequities.
Deputy leader Cllr Bronwen Brooks added: "I am thrilled to welcome the return of the Barry Bike Club at Iolo Park again this year."
“Learning to ride a bike is an important life skill, not to mention the additional physical and mental health benefits associated with this type of exercise."
“The Barry Bike Club scheme aligns with our Project Zero goal to reduce our carbon emissions to net zero by 2030 as well encouraging residents of all ages to choose active travel.”
Children can bring their own bike - if inspected and deemed safe by staff – or use one provided by the bike club. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
