Barry Town United says it was shocked after hearing its vice-captain Evan Press was jailed for drug dealing.
It's emerged the 24-year-old midfielder from Splott, Cardiff, was given a two-and-a-half year prison sentence after pleading guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine between February 2021 and November 2023.
The Cymru Premier club, where he played for seven years, was unaware of the case until shortly after sentencing at Newport Crown Court on Wednesday.
Press, who pleaded guilty on February 11th, went onto play three more games for Barry. His last appearance was as captain in their 2-1 league win over Aberystwyth Town at Jenner Park on March 11th.
In a brief statement on social media on Friday, a club spokesperson said: "We can confirm that Evan Press was sentenced to a prison term on 19th March."
"This has been a shock to the club, and at this moment in time, we as a club are not privy to all the facts of the case and will not be making any further comment at this stage."
Press joined the Jenner Park club in 2018 after coming through the youth ranks at Newport County, where he made one first-team appearance in an EFL Trophy match against Cheltenham Town in November 2017.
Since moving to Barry, he has made 187 appearances, including every Cymru Premier fixture so far this season, and scored eleven goals.
He was part of the squad which won promotion back to the top flight of Welsh football when Barry won the 2022-23 Cymru South title, and in the same season, the Welsh Blood Service Cup.
It's understood Press' contract with the club was due to expire at the end of the current season.
In court, he was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £190 while a judge ordered an iPhone used by Press for drug dealing to be destroyed.
