Barry lights up for Christmas festival

Barry Town Council

Barry's Christmas lights switch-on will be held as part of a two-day festival in the town centre next month.

It will be one of the highlights of the Barry Christmas Festival in King Square and Central Park on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd November.

Barry Town Council has teamed up with Vale Council for the event, which is being partly funded by the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund.

Santa and his elves will arrive on Friday evening to light up the town hall, the high streets and the Christmas tree with a countdown on Kings Square.

On Saturday, Lumi, an illuminated 4-metre tall reindeer, will be paying a visit to King Square, where there'll also be a Christmas market.

Over 30 local traders will be selling personalised gifts along with crochet, candles & jewellery as well as cakes, honey, fudge and alcohol.

There'll also be live music, along with funfair rides around the pedestrianised area of Holton Road, along with street entertainment, Santa's grotto, light arches, a food zone and a bar.

This year, Barry Town Council will also be lighting up the town hall and providing the town's Christmas tree on King Square, alongside the usual displays on Park Crescent, High Street and Holton Road.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, leader of Barry Town Council, said: "This year’s festive decorations will be a great example of partnership working in the town with the Vale Council’s teams taking responsibility for getting the tree and supporting infrastructure in place at no cost."

"Christmas can sometimes be a difficult time of year for people, and the Barry Christmas Festival is an event that celebrates coming together with friends and family, and being there for each other."

"It will also help boost footfall for local traders ahead of the Christmas period. I look forward to joining the people of Barry for the annual Christmas light switch on, and would like to wish everybody a very joyous festive season.”

The Barry Christmas Festival opens at 3pm on Friday 22nd November and at midday on Saturday 23rd November, closing on both days at 7pm.
