Garden waste collections face price hike

VOG Council

The cost of garden waste collections for Vale households could increase as part of budget proposals.

Households can now sign up for this year's subscription service - with prices at £36 for up to eight bags per fortnight or £54 for more than eight bags per fortnight, the same as in 2024.

But Vale Council says prices may go up after Monday 10th March following a review of its charges for the 2025-26 financial year.

The subscription service was introduced two years ago when the council stopped free garden waste collections.

Anyone who already uses the service will not have their subscriptions automatically renewed for the following year.

Cllr Mark Wilson, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said the paid-for service had a "successful first full year in operation."

He added: "The service has gone from strength to strength since the initial launch of a paid-for garden waste subscription model in July 2023."

"Money generated from this scheme will help the council generate much-needed income as we look to overcome a significant budget shortfall."

"I’m pleased to see the service continue to develop since its inception and I am grateful for the cooperation and support from residents. I urge residents to buy now at these early bird prices, which matches last year’s offer."

The council advises subscribers to put their waste bags at the edge of their properties by 7am on collection day.

Items that can be collected grass, most leaves, plants and flowers, as well as shrub cuttings, hedge trimmings and pet bedding by non-meat-eating animals such as hay, straw and wood shavings.

Residents are advised not to include soil, logs, stones, invasive weeds such as Japanese knotweed and animal or human faeces.

Non-subscribers can still take their garden waste to a household waste recycling centre for free or compost it at home.

Anyone wishing to subscribe should visit the Vale of Glamorgan Council website or call 01446 729 566.
