Indy campaigners prepare for Barry march

Sky News

Welsh indpendence campaigners are preparing to march through Barry town centre on Saturday.

Earlier this month, Yes Cymru claimed support for Welsh independence had reached an "all-time high".

A survey for the pro-indy grassroots movement suggested 41% of voters would back independence if a referendum took place tomorrow.

Saturday's march, jointly organised by YesCymru and AUOBCymru, will be the latest in a series of events held in towns and cities across Wales, including Cardiff in 2022, which was attended by an estimated 10,000 people.

Former Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood will be among the speakers at a rally in King Square.

She said: "It's time to end our dependence. We have an opportunity to build an alternative to the failed economic model which extracts resources and profits to the benefit of the City of London and the large corporations, leaving crumbs for workers and communities in Wales."

"In the face of growing intolerance and hate, our movement must offer hope. We know our politics and our country can do better than this."

Among the other speakers will be Anna Arqué i Solsona, a pro-Catalan independence activist who also spoke at a fringe economic discussion in Barry on Friday night.

The spokesperson for ICEC (International Commission of European Citizens) said: "Movements like ours believe democracy is the best path to full self-determination, even when it clashes with the interests of the states we're trapped within."

"That's why solidarity among our nations is vital, rooted in human rights and democratic principles. I'm really looking forward to being in Wales thanks to YesCymru, and to learning from such an inspiring movement – one Catalans support with hope and enthusiasm."

According to Yes Cymru's poll, just over 51% of decided voters would back independence if Wales could rejoin the European Union - with support among 25-34 year olds surging to 72%.

Phyl Griffiths, YesCymru chair, said: "The latest poll results on Welsh independence are a clear sign that support for Welsh independence is growing, along with the demand for real change. But real change isn't about populism. Populism feeds on frustration and fosters division."

"In Wales, we care deeply for our communities and have a proud record of punching above our weight – in science, sport, the arts, politics and social justice. I'm proud to see our nation reflected with hope and ambition in those poll figures."

"I look forward to joining people from all over Wales in Barry for a vibrant, positive march for independence."

The Cadoxton area of Barry was home to the first Welsh branch of the Cymru Fydd (Young Wales) movement for Welsh home and self-governance at the turn of the 20th century.

Two years after it was founded in Bethel Chapel, Cymru Fydd members won seats in Barry's first council elections in 1894.

Also appearing at the King Square rally will be Plaid Cymru election candidate Kiera Marshall, Green Party activist Tessa Marshall, local Plaid Cymru councillor Mark Hooper and singers Eadyth Crawford and Emma Winter.

Meanwhile, the Vale of Glamorgan MP says he does not believe Welsh independence would be an ''answer to every problem''.

Kanishka Narayan said a 'decade-long' uncertainty over the matter would hit the poorest and most vulnerable in society the hardest - but he insisted he was willing to debate the issue with his constituents.

The Labour MP told Bro Radio's 'Ask Your' programme: "If you are walking around with the hammer of independence as your answer to every problem, I don't think you're trying to solve for the interests of Wales fundamentally."

"If you look at the leasing of Crown Estate assets, which has come up as a question...there's been a great wave of making the most for Wales by doing it jointly in South Wales with other parts of southern England. We've been able to get a better result for Wales."

"That's what I'm fighting for...not just going around with the hammer of independence and trying to knock every single question with that, simply for the sake of ideology."
