New trees springing up in Penarth

New street trees are being planted in Penarth for the first time in 'many years'.

Vale of Glamorgan Council says it's part of their plans to increase tree cover on council land over the next fifteen years, in line with its aim to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The newly planted trees can already be found around Beach Road, Plymouth Road, Victoria Road and on Victoria Square.

Work to plant even more trees around the town is expected to continue until the end of March once the historic tree stumps are removed.

Cllr Mark Wilson, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "These new trees are being planted to replace the historic ones that once adorned streets and green spaces in and around Penarth."

"Tree planting and rewilding is important work that furthers our Project Zero plans to drastically cut Co2 emissions before the end of the decade as well as increasing biodiversity in the area."

The council says it's working in partnership with local landowners and conservation groups such as the Penarth Tree Forum as part of the tree planting.
