Penarth woman jailed for hit-and-run

South Wales Police

A court has heard how a cyclist needed his leg amputated following a hit-and-run collision.

Savannah Roberts was jailed after her Ford Fiesta car knocked the rider off his bike as she was driving up Penarth Road in Cardiff.

Roberts (27), from Penarth, stopped and returned to the cyclist following the collision in the early hours of Friday 5th August 2022 - but she then drove off, leaving him lying on the roadside asking for help.

The cyclist was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, before being later transferred to Morriston Hospital in Swansea, where he needed his leg amputated.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Roberts sold off her car to try and hide any link to her and the accident.

But she was caught by detectives following extensive CCTV and forensic investigations.

Footage released by South Wales Police after sentencing showed Roberts going through a red light on the night of the collision and later being arrested.

When she was later interviewed by officer, she replied "no comment" to all of their questions.

But in court, Roberts went onto plead guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving and perverting the course of justice.

She was sentenced to three years and nine months.
