PODS go for Glammy glory

Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society

Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society has picked up 34 'Glammy' award nominations.

PODS has been recognised by the Glamorgan Drama League for individual performances in five of their productions during their centenary year.

A stage adaptation of the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love gets six nominations - including best young performer in a play for Austin Beasley.

There are 14 nominations for the PODS version of Mel Brooks' The Producers, including one for the entire female ensemble performing the Little Old Ladies' zimmer frame dance.

The PODS youth group gets three nominations for its first full-scale production - the Alan Parker musical Bugsy Malone, staged at the Paget Rooms in July.

2024 also saw the society's first open-air theatre production - Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood - held at the Kymin Gardens, which earns five nominations in the drama section.

Finally, there's another six nominations - including for the entire cast of the PODS adaptation of the comedy drama Steel Magnolias.

The nominations for the Glammies' top categories - such as Best Director, Best Drama, Best Musical and Best Presentation - have yet to be announced.

PODS Chairman Mary Gardner, who has been performing with the company for more than 50 years, said: "Receiving more than 30 Glammie Award nominations for our 2024 productions is such an amazing achievement and I am proud beyond belief of everyone who has performed in our plays and musical productions as well as the many other people who work back stage and behind the scenes and who have helped to make this such a successful year for PODS, and one that is fitting for our centenary year.”

“We are proud to be part of the Penarth community and are so grateful to the audiences who support and enjoy our productions. I hope that the small group of people, who 100 years ago decided to form an amateur musical theatre and drama society, would be equally proud of what has taken place during the last century and of the company that PODS is today.”

The PODS centenary was also marked with a major exhibition at the Penarth Pier Pavilion, charting the history of the society.

The winners of the Glammies will be announced on Saturday 8th March - but in the meantime, the society is preparing to stage the first of its productions for 2025 - 'Allo 'Allo 2: The Camembert Caper - based on the hit BBC sitcom, which will be staged at the Paget Rooms from 19th to 22nd March.

Shrek the Musical follows in May while the youth section will be presenting Disney's High School Musical in June.

Tickets for ‘Allo ‘Allo 2 and all PODS productions can be booked via Ticketsource.
