Barry beaten by leaders Penybont

Barry Town United lost 2-1 to Cymru Premier leaders Penybont in their Boxing Day derby at Jenner Park.

It's now three straight defeats for Steve Jenkins' men as the race for a top six finish continues to tighten up.

Barry have just two games left to secure a spot in the Championship Conference before the league splits for the remainder of the season.

Jenkins made just one change from the side beaten at Bala last Saturday - with Callum Sainty returning in place of Josh Beecher.

There was a twelfth player of sorts in the Barry squad as the voice of Oh! Radio - Knock Off Nessa - led out the teams, fresh from her namesake entertaining 12.3 million viewers in the Gavin and Stacey finale on Christmas Day.

But it was another hometown hero, captain Kayne McLaggon, who broke the deadlock on 22 minutes, finding Mikey George's cross before chipping the ball beyond the reach of keeper Adam Przybek to take the lead.

George went close to adding a second for Barry after the break, but his header from Evan Press' volley went wide of the far post - while referee Bryn Markham-Jones waved away strong calls for a penalty after Robbie Willmott was brought down by Mael Davies.

But Penybont drew level on 62 minutes after some fine build-up play, which saw Nathan Wood's volley beating a goalmouth scramble and finding veteran Chris Venables, who nodded in past Liam Armstrong from close range.

The visitors maintained the pressure with Armstrong denying sub Keyon Reffell while Mael Davies blasted over the bar.

The decisive moment came on 71 minutes when Kane Owen saw off a momentary interception from Keenan Patten, before laying off the ball to Clayton Green, who drilled home from the edge of the area to score against his former club.

Sub Ieuan Owen went close to equalising for Barry with a tight angled effort which skimmed across the box, while Will Richards was narrowly wide from Ben Margetson's header as time ebbed away.

Penybont remain just a point clear of The New Saints, who have been quick to play catch up, while Barry remain in seventh with only goal difference keeping Caernarfon in the top six following their 5-2 defeat at home to the reigning champions.

Barry pay a lunchtime visit to Briton Ferry Llansawel on New Year's Eve (12.30pm ko) before Haverfordwest visit Jenner Park on 11th January, when the final make-up of the top and bottom six will be known.
