Barry beaten by relegated Archers

Barry Town United lost 2-0 to relegated Cardiff Met in their last home game of the Adran Premier campaign.

It was an emotional afternoon at the Jenner Park club, who will finish sixth in the table, as Lauren Harris was given both a guard of honour and a standing ovation after announcing her departure from the club.

The Barry captain said on social media that she always vowed never to leave the club until it was "in a better place and showing some success", but felt now was the time to "let the youngsters continue to come through".

But the match itself would prove to be a much-needed lift for their opponents, whose first win of the season came at the 19th attempt and at the tail end of a season to forget.

Archers director of football Dr Chris Baker had accepted personal responsibility for Met's relegation - a far cry from the days when the club was helping to nurture the likes of former Wales skipper Sophie Ingle and with six league titles to their name.

Both goals came in the first half - with Ruby Colleton beating keeper Molly Arnesen to take the lead for the visitors after 15 minutes.

Barry nearly found a equaliser soon after when Erin Murray was denied by a superb save from Met's Charlotte Smith.

Molly Chapman doubled the visitors' lead from a fine solo effort on 39 minutes, preceding what would be a frustrating second half of few chances for Barry, with a Murray setpiece in ching over the bar in stoppage time.

A disappointing end to the ladies' home campaign as Met belatedly clinched their elusive first win - with both sides meeting again at Cyncoed for their final game next Sunday at 5pm.

Pontypridd United remain on course for an instant return to the Adran Premier next season after a 4-0 win over Llanelli saw them crowned Adran South champions.

Ponty will face Adran North winners Connah's Quay Nomads on Sunday 20th April to decide who will take Met's place in the Welsh top flight next season.
