Barry's Euro hopes dashed by Cofis

Barry Town United's season is over after a 5-2 defeat at Caernarfon which killed off their hopes of European qualifying.

Andy Legg's men went into the Cymru Premier's end-of-season play-offs as the form team, after winning five of their last six league games.

But despite taking an early lead, Barry were undone by a four-goal salvo from Louis Lloyd as the Cofis booked their place in the semi finals.

There was also one final appearance for Kayne McLaggon, who came off the subs bench and scored his 130th club goal.

Both sides opted for three changes from their starting line-ups last weekend - with McLaggon handing over the captaincy to Callum Sainty.

Ben Margetson returned from a one-game ban after his red card at Connah's Quay alongside Elliot Richards and the prodigious Ieuan Owen.

And Barry could not have asked for a better start - when after just six minutes, Owen Cuddihy's cross to the edge of the box was met with an audacious backheel flick from Richards that defied home keeper Ben Hughes.

But Caernarfon, who had claimed just two wins from six in the final stretch of the league campaign, began to mount their fightback on 23 minutes - and Barry's defence was left wanting as Adam Davies set up Lloyd to poke home the equaliser past Liam Armstrong.

The Barry keeper made a fine save to deny Sam Downey, when the ball cannoned off the Cofi midfielder from Lloyd's clearance.

And the visitors fought to keep honours even by the break - but in added time, Lloyd was on the receiving end of a Morgan Owen setpiece, drilling home to give Caernarfon the lead.

Hopes of a second-half fightback from Barry were quickly killed off when that man Lloyd deftly kept the ball in play before a superb Trivela pass to Adam Davies, who lobbed the ball over Armstrong with just over 30 seconds gone.

Caernarfon launched into a rout as Lloyd made it four with a 58th minute penalty before scoring a fourth of his own on 73 minutes - Davies was again instrumental, beating Mikey George before his cross found the Cofis' top scorer at the far post.

But a disappointing way to end the season did finish on a bright spot - and indeed, McLaggon got the last word with four minutes of normal time left, heading home Ieuan Owen's cross for one last goal in his very last Barry game after eight years.

Alas, Caernarfon had almost single-handedly cruised into the semi-finals, where they'll face either Cardiff Met at home or travel to Haverfordwest County, pending the outcome of next weekend's Welsh Cup final.

As Barry boss Andy Legg put it to S4C's Sgorio pre-match, "there's no next week if they lose" - but having improved on last season's efforts, Barry can at least look towards next season, when they'll look to go even further.
