Barry RFC Youth earned a crucial bonus point as they beat St Peter's 26-22 in the Cardiff Premiership Blue.
A Morgan Prosser try gave the Bombers a crucial victory in their quest for Cardiff Cup honours - their second win in the competition, with two games left to play, keeps the Bombers very much in contention.
Injuries, and half-term absences, meant Barry had to field a makeshift side. With four regular front row specialists missing, Noah Williams took over an unfamiliar role as hooker.
The game began with contested scrums, but midway through, both teams and officials agreed to switch to uncontested.
“It was stop-start from the off,” said coach Sam Bowditch. “But they played the Barry way and stuck to the structures. When they do, it’s very fruitful and they do score some lovely tries from it."
“The result is huge, considering the team we had out. The victory is a testament to the boys and their training, and their never-say-die attitude.”
In a tightly-contested match, the hosts scored first, and the teams traded scores throughout. Barry took the lead for the first time midway through the second half, but St Peters hit back, with the Bombers only edging in front when Prosser scored late on.
Movado Hall scored Barry’s first try following a tap penalty, and Caelen Hurley got the second after Ellis O’Grady took advantage of a knock on to break away before setting up Hurley for the try. Prosser converted both for a 14-14 half-time score.
Jack Huggins put Barry ahead with a pick-and-go, taking three defenders with him over the line, before Prosser converted for a 21-17 lead.
St Peters went back in front with a try before Prosser rounded off a Barry counter-attack, scoring in the corner to secure the victory.
Barry visit St Albans on Saturday, but they have yet to fix a date for their home game against Treorchy, which was postponed on October 19th.
