Fishlock in Wales squad despite injury concerns

FAW

Jess Fishlock has been named in the Wales squad for their Women's Euros play-off semi final with Slovakia.

Wales' all-time top scorer features in the 25-player squad despite suffering a leg injury while playing for Seattle Reign last month.

The midfielder has been absent for the NWSL club since 6th September, when they beat Angel City 3-2.

Manager Rhian Wilkinson has also named vice-captain Ceri Holland, who has been absent for WSL club Liverpool after picking up a foot injury.

Former captain Sophie Ingle is the main absentee from the squad, as Wales seek to qualify for a major tournament for the first time in their history.

The Chelsea defender is recovering after she went surgery for an ACL injury and is expected to remain on the sidelines for much of the season.

But the two-legged play-off will mark the first game since Fishlock's Seattle teammate, Angharad James, was named as Ingle's permanent successor as skipper.

Josie Green and Anna Filbey are recalled to the squad, alongside Leicester City's Hannah Cain, who has nearly recovered from her own ACL injury.

Three uncapped forwards are also named - Mared Griffiths, Tianna Teisar and Charlotte Lee, who received her first senior call-up after being involved in the U19 squad last season.

Manchester United's Hayley Ladd, who was also appointed as a vice-captain alongside Holland, also features.

Wales are potentially four games away from qualifying for next year's Euros in Switzerland - but first, they take on Slovakia in Poprad on Friday 25th October with the return leg at the Cardiff City Stadium four days later.

Wilkinson's side head into the play-offs with an unbeaten record so far in 2024 - they've scored eighteen goals from their four wins and two draws.

The winners of the semi-finals will go onto face either Georgia or the Republic of Ireland in a two-legged final on Friday 29th November and Tuesday 3rd December to determine who qualifies.

Wales squad to face Slvoakia: Olivia Clark (FC Twente), Laura O’Sullivan-Jones (Gwalia United), Safia Middleton Patel (Manchester United), Rhiannon Roberts (Real Betis), Josie Green (Crystal Palace), Charlie Estcourt (DC Power), Hayley Ladd (Manchester United), Gemma Evans (Liverpool), Mayzee Davies (Liverpool Feds - dual contract with Manchester United), Lily Woodham (Crystal Palace - on loan from Seattle Reign), Ella Powell (Bristol City), Anna Filbey (Watford), Alice Griffiths (Southampton), Angharad James (Seattle Reign), Lois Joel (Newcastle United), Rachel Rowe (Southampton), Carrie Jones (IFK Norrköping), Ffion Morgan (Bristol City), Jess Fishlock (Seattle Reign), Ceri Holland (Liverpool), Charlotte Lee (Aston Villa), Kayleigh Barton (Charlton Athletic), Mary McAteer (Sunderland), Mared Griffiths (Manchester United), Tianna Teisar (Bristol City), Hannah Cain (Leicester City).
