Ingle to miss Nations League openers

FAW

Sophie Ingle will miss Wales' first two games in their latest Women's Nations League campaign.

At the start of a pivotal year, Rhian Wilkinson's squad are peparing to build up to this summer's Euros - their first ever appearance at a major tournament.

The Wales boss has handed a first call-up to young Manchester United defender Scarlett Hill for their opening two games against Italy in Monza and Sweden at the Racecourse in Wrexham.

Wilkinson has also been boosted by the return of both Elise Hughes and Esther Morgan following long-term injury lay-offs, but Southampton forward Rachel Rowe is absent due to injury.

Ex-Wales captain Ingle is still recovering from an ACL injury she picked up while playing a pre-season game for Chelsea last September - but the veteran is aiming to return to action ahead of this July's historic tournament in Switzerland.

Hayley Ladd looks likely to join Wales' growing centurion group if she starts in either game - with the Everton midfielder currently sitting on 99 caps.

Qualification for the Women's Euros last November followed on from Wales securing promotion back to League A after topping their group.

Their latest campaign kicks off at the Stadio Brianteo in Monza on Friday 21st February (5.15pm ko) before returning four days later to Wrexham, where the Wilkinson era began last April with a 4-0 victory over Croatia in what turned out to be Ingle's last game as skipper.

Wales will embark on a nationwide tour ahead of their Euros debut - taking on Denmark at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday 4th April before finishing their campaign at home to Italy on Tuesday 3rd June at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Wales squad to face Italy (A) and Sweden (H): Olivia Clark (Leicester), Laura O'Sullivan-Jones (Gwalia United), Safia Middleton-Patel (Manchester United), Rhiannon Roberts (Real Betis), Josie Green (Crystal Palace), Charlie Estcourt (DC Power), Hayley Ladd (Everton), Gemma Evans (Liverpool), Mayzee Davies (Manchester City), Lily Woodham (Crystal Palace - on loan from Seattle Reign), Ella Powell (Bristol City), Scarlett Hill (Manchester United), Esther Morgan (Sheffield United), Alice Griffiths (Durham - on loan from Southampton), Angharad James (captain - Seattle Reign), Lois Joel (Newcastle United), Carrie Jones (IFK Norrköping), Ffion Morgan (Bristol City), Jess Fishlock (Seattle Reign), Ceri Holland (Liverpool), Ellen Jones (Sunderland), Kayleigh Barton (Charlton Athletic), Mary McAteer (Sunderland), Mared Griffiths (Manchester United), Hannah Cain (Leicester City), Elise Hughes (Crystal Palace)
