Lloyd drops to bench for Ireland clash

Evan Lloyd has been dropped to the replacements bench for Wales' Six Nations clash with Ireland - their first under caretaker coach Matt Sherratt.

The Penarth-born hooker made his first international starts in the defeats against France and Italy - in what turned out to be Warren Gatland's final games as head coach.

But Cardiff coach Sherratt has named eight changes for his first game in charge as Wales look to move on from the Gatland era with a first win in 15 Test matches.

Scarlets wing Ellis Mee makes his debut - taking over from the injured Josh Adams - while fly-half Gareth Anscombe and centre Max Llewellyn both make their first appearances of the tornament, following their late call-ups to the squad.

Tommy Reffell at openside flanker, tighthead prop WillGriff John and loosehead prop Nicky Smith also make their tournament bows.

Tomos Williams is named scrum half and Jac Morgan retains the captaincy, switching to blind-side, with Taulupe Faletau retaining his starting place at number eight.

Dafydd Jenkins returns from illness to partner Will Rowlands in the second row.

Joining Lloyd on the bench will be Gareth Thomas and Henry Thomas, while the likes of Eddie James, Nick Tompkins and James Botham miss out altogether.

Despite Wales' woes, Saturday's clash with the reigning champions is a guaranteed sell-out as Sherratt looks to steer Wales away from an era of unwelcome records - including their lowest ever world ranking of 12th and a barren run at the Principality Stadium stretching back to August 2023.

By contrast, Ireland are on course for their third straight Six Nations title - and one game away from another Triple Crown - even with their interim coach Simon Easterby being linked with the vacant Wales job.

Matt Sherratt said: "We have spoken this week about being brave, but not reckless and making sure everyone knows their roles. We also know that keeping our discipline will be huge."

"Everyone is excited for our first home game of the Six Nations. The atmosphere Wales fans create at Principality Stadium is incredible and playing at home is something the players really look forward to."

Wales XV to face Ireland: Blair Murray; Tom Rogers, Max Llewellyn, Ben Thomas, Ellis Mee; Gareth Anscombe, Tomos Williams; Nicky Smith, Elliot Dee, WillGruff John, Will Rowlands, Dafydd Jenkins, Jac Morgan (captain), Tommy Reffell, Taulupe Faletau
Replacements: Evan Lloyd, Gareth Thomas, Henry Thomas, Teddy Williams, Aaron Wainwright, Rhdori Williams, Jarrod Evans, Joe Roberts.
