Major edge Rangers in Welsh Cup derby

FAW

Llantwit Major booked their place in the Welsh Cup second round after a thrilling 3-2 derby win over Ely Rangers.

The Wenvoe club - who play in the South Wales Premier League - came close to providing a shock against Cymru South opposition at Windmill Lane.

Rangers boss Stephen Kelleher said pre-match: "It hasn’t been the start to the season we have wanted, but we have something special here. The lads are extremely talented and want to work for each other. We are going to continue our hard work...and carry that forward."

Llantwit handed a debut to young goalkeeper Callum Craythorne in the absence of veteran Jack Lansdown, following his stint representing the Cymru South at the UEFA Regions Cup in Serbia.

The hosts went ahead via Finn Jennings after 16 minutes, but a straight red card for Tom Walbeoff led to Rangers' Alex Lloyd equalising from a setpiece ten minutes later.

A tough afternoon for Major got even tougher eight minutes after the break, when Reuben Bryl fired Rangers in front.

Manager Ben Stait's response was a triple substitution - and the gambit paid off as Tom Tweedy scored a quick fire brace past visiting keeper Jaedyn Brana to restore Llantwit's lead.

Both sides would finish the game a man down as Zac Cleary was sent off for Rangers, who bowed out of the cup with their heads held high after taking Llantwit down to the wire.

Llantwit resume their Cymru South campaign with a Friday night visit to Trethomas Bluebirds, while Ely Rangers have a fortnight off until they entertain Ton Pentre in the South Wales Premier League on 5th October.

Cardiff Bay Warriors are also through to the second round of the cup following a 2-0 win over Swansea club West End.

Omar Mohamed scored both goals for the Grangetown side, who will learn their next opponents on Wednesday night.

The second round draw, which sees Barry Town United and the rest of the Cymru Premier enter the fray, can be seen at 8pm on the FAW's RedWall+ channel.
