MG Cup: Barry go through on penalties

Barry Town United are through to the third round of the Nathaniel MG Cup after beating Llanelli Town on penalties.

It followed a 1-1 draw at Jenner Park on Friday night, which saw four of Barry's summer signings make their debut.

Goalkeeper Liam Armstrong went onto pick up most of the opening night notices at Jenner Park, after making his bow alongside Josh Yorwerth, Ben Margetson and Elliot Richards.

Manager Steve Jenkins also handed a first senior start to youth product Kian Woodiwiss, but their latest arrival - former Newport County midfielder Robbie Willmott - missed out on the second round clash as he's still waiting for international clearance.

The first half remained goalless despite Yorwerth being sent off for two yellow cards just before the break, before Armstrong was called up to make his penalty save in yellow and blue.

Barry went ahead on 68 minutes via former Bristol Rovers midfielder Richards, with substitute Drew Perrett providing the assist.

But Llanelli - who were Cymru South runners-up last season, found the equaliser through captain Joe Hopkins on 83 minutes to force a shoot out.

Armstrong went onto make two further saves before it fell to Barry mainstay Evan Press to score the decisive spot kick and book Barry's place in the third round.

The third round draw will be made on Monday - but for Barry, attention now turns to the start of the new Cymru Premier campaign next Saturday, when they entertain Bala at Jenner Park (2.30pm ko). Full match commentary will be available from Talk of the Town at broradio.fm/sport
