Nomads cut the gap on Barry

Barry Town United slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Connah's Quay Nomads in the Cymru Premier.

A first defeat under head coach Andy Legg saw Barry's lead at the top of the Play Off Conference cut to five points.

Owen Cuddihy was handed his first team debut following his arrival in the January transfer window, with Mikey George dropping to the bench in the only starting change from the 1-1 draw at Newtown a fortnight ago.

The hosts threatened early on when Ollie Hulbert struck the crossbar from Elliot Richards' cross - but any clear cut chances from either side were few and far between until late in the first half.

Goalkeeper Liam Armstrong did well to deny Noah Edwards' throughball after it sliced through the Barry defence.

But on 42 minutes, the Nomads midfielder was on hand to meet Declan Poole's cross before firing into the bottom right corner.

Callum Sainty, who had already taken a knock after a heavy fall, went close to a stoppage time equaliser when he headed over the bar from Robbie Willmott's free kick.

But early in the second half, the centre back was substituted in favour of Will Richards after suffering another non-contact injury.

Both sides upped the ante after the break with Armstrong denying Rhys Hughes from close range, while captain Kayne McLaggon found space to in the box to get a shot away, which landed in the sidenetting.

Max Woodcock proved particularly dangerous for Connah's Quay, with one effort going narrowly wide and a second hitting the post in the space of a few nervy minutes.

At the other end, Nomads keeper George Ratcliffe made a fine double save to deny both Ieuan Owen and Ollie Hulbert at close range, before comfortably dealing with subsitute Mikey George's effort from distance.

Ellis Williams was brought on for his Barry debut as a replacement for Evan Press, but in an increasingly scrappy encounter, Connah's Quay killed the game off in the 90th minute as Sam Durrant curled home the ball past Armstrong.

With their lead in the Play Off Conference narrowing after just one win from three under Legg, Barry face another lengthy spell before their next key test away at relegation candidates Briton Ferry Llansawel on Friday 7th March.
