Mike Prosser is back as chairman of Barry Rugby Club, following an extraordinary general meeting.

Prosser, who has been acting chairman since May in a transitional period for the club - following a number of resignations from the committee - was elected unopposed on Friday night.

Prosser was chairman for just over two years until June 2022 when he stepped down, citing work pressures. His new post means he is no longer able to play an active role on the club’s coaching staff and he has also relinquished the post of first team manager.

That role is filled by Jo Eveleigh, who was elected unopposed as club secretary at the EGM.

Eveleigh has been acting as secretary during the transitional period, and with her new post has stepped down as Islanders’ lead at the club. Responsibility for the girls’ section now rests with Ellie Carbis.

The new club treasurer is former player Lloyd Jones, who contacted the club following the resignations. He has been acting as treasurer during the transitional period and was also elected unopposed on Friday. The three new officers become directors of the club.

The committee members are:

  • Zoe O’Sullivan, responsible for sponsorship/grant funding
  • Juila Morgan - Mini & Junior joint secretary
  • Ruth Thomas - Mini & Junior joint secretary
  • Hayley Tombs - Safeguarding officer
  • Glyn Pirso - Patron liaison
  • Tim Jones - Patron liaison
  • Tom Haigh - Functions and Events

The meeting was told that the club suffered a significant financial hit last season, when pitch drainage issues at the Reservoir Field meant matches had to be moved to the artificial pitch at Ysgol Bro Morgannwg.

Hire costs and consequent downturn in bar takings will be detailed at the club’s annual meeting in October.

On the financial side, the club is actively pursuing sponsorships for the new season, and grant funding for development in conjunction with the 99-year lease on the first team pitch, which has yet to be signed because of the drainage issues.
