Swimming club search for missing archives

Barry ASC

Barry Amateur Swimming Club (ASC) is looking to recover missing scrapbooks that form a crucial part of their historical archive.

The club marks its centenary next year - formed on 7th April 1926 to coincide wtih the opening of the Cold Knap swimming pool the following month.

Barry ASC held regular galas, attracting South Wales and wider competitors.

Following the pool's opening gala, four-time Olympic water polo champion Paolo Radmilovic from Cardiff offered coaching.

The first club gala, held in September that year, featured water polo, squadron races, open races, handicap events, and diving.

In 1927, the club's wooden headquarters were built for £102, followed by a long-distance open event: one mile for men, 880 yards for women. The club still holds an annual 800-metre event to this day.

The ASC had cleared its debts by 1932 and growth prompted membership limits by 1971, with 270 swimming at the Cold Knap and 65 at RAF St Athan in winter.

The club began year-round activites when it moved to Barry Leisure Centre in 1982 - though a temporary move to Cogan Leisure Centre four years later, due to repairs, nearly led to its demise. But it survived and now trains again in Barry.

A Barry ASC spokesperson said: "The club's history is documented in scrapbooks, but gaps exist. We seek information on scrapbooks from 1926-1930, 1935-1947, 1950-1968, and 1991-1994."
