There were mixed fortunes for Vale teams in the opening rounds of the WRU's league cup competitions.

Penarth went out of the Division One Cup after a 17-7 defeat at home to Llanharan, while their near neighbours Barry withdrew from their match against Abergavenny - with as many as ten players absent due to illness and injury.

Cowbridge booked their place in round two of the Division Two Cup following a 35-31 victory at Blaina, while Llantwit Major beat Treharris 45-5 to progress in the Division Three Cup.

Old Penarthians were knocked out of the Division Five Cup despite holding Cefn Coed to a 24-24 draw - their hosts were awarded victory on the try count. Elsewhere, Sully Sports began their cup campaign with a 21-18 win at Girling.
