Ynysybwl 22-29 Barry
Report by Ken Watkins for Bro Radio Sport
Barry left it late to secure a deserved victory in a hard-fought opening league fixture at Ynysybwl, gaining revenge for a heavy defeat the last time the two sides met.
After comfortably looking the better side in a first half littered with penalties, Barry went into the interval 12-8 ahead - with Kyle Barros landing four penalties after five, nine, 14 and 31 minutes - as Barry’s pack dominated the home eight.
Ynysybwl replied with a try from Joe Griffiths following a penalty lineout in the 22nd minute, and Joseph William landed a penalty in the 29th minute to close the gap.
But Ynysybwl started the second half strongly, and took advantage of some poor tackling in the 43rd minute. Dewi Voyle ended a break from the halfway line, and William converting to put the hosts 15-12 ahead.
And from a penalty lineout in the 53rd minute, William went over following a catch and drive, before adding the extras to give Ynysybwl a ten-point lead.
Barry cut the deficit with a good move through the backs in the 58th minute - hooker Dave Provis joining the line and going over in the corner.
After dominating much of the remaining time, and squandering a couple of good chances, Barry finally regained the lead in the 78th minute, with Einan Scott going over after some intense pressure on the Ynysybwl line and Barros converting.
And with the clock in the red, Barry forced a turnover deep in Ynysybwl territory, swiftly switching the attack across the park for Scott to go over in the corner.
Barry are next in league action on November 27 when Treorchy are the visitors to the Reservoir Field.
