Llantwit Major AFC welcomed Pontypridd Town to Windmill Lane and were looking to put last week’s disappointing defeat at home to Briton Ferry behind them.
However, it was not to be as a thoroughly disappointing performance, by far their worst of the season, led to another defeat and drew Llantwit ever closer to the relegation places.
Llantwit played into a very strong wind in the first half and created their first goal-scoring opportunity in the eighth minute when a throw in was headed on by defender Sean Williams and Llantwit striker Josh Morgan produced a snap shot from around eight yards out that brought a fine save from the Pontypridd keeper, Morgan Davies.
The game was dictated by the wind, with Llantwit at times struggling to clear the ball away from their goal area as Pontypridd applied the pressure and took advantage of the windy conditions.
In one of the rare attacks Llantwit managed in the first half, striker Josh Morgan was put through on goal in the 29th minute and he went around the keeper, but a heavy touch left him with an acute angle and the ball went out of play.
In the 43rd minute disaster stuck for Llantwit when Pontypridd scored, and it turned out to be the winning goal. A free kick just inside the Llantwit half was met on the edge of the Llantwit six-yard box by Pontypridd striker Gavin Beddard, and his header across goal was nodded in from close range by Lewis Cosslett.
Once again, Llantwit found themselves a goal down at half time, becoming a familiar tale so far this season. The second half began with high anticipation at playing with the wind in their favour. However, a dire 45 minutes saw Llantwit fail to create a single goal-scoring opportunity. The opposing goalkeeper did not have to make a save, and any shots at goal were either wide of the target or way over the bar.
To sum up the second half Llantwit performance, when a ball was played across the Pontypridd six-yard box in the dying minutes and there was an opportunity to score, three Llantwit players in turn slipped in the muddy conditions and the ball went past them all.
Llantwit’s, next game is away to Undy Athletic in the JD Cymru South Championship on February 8, kick Off 2pm.
