Barry crash to another derby defeat

Barry Town United were brought down to earth by Penybont in a 4-0 defeat on Friday night.

The euphoria of last weekend's comeback win over the Nomads was long gone as the in-form hosts romped home in the first of two consecutive Five Mile Lane derbies.

The result also confirmed Penybont's top-six finish ahead of the league split, with Gavin Chesterfield's men looking ever more poised to face a relegation battle.

After a bright start from the visitors, who handed Michael George his first start since returning to the club, fellow returnee Jonathan Hood gave away a penalty on 42 minutes, after bringing down full-back Mael Davies in the box.

Nathan Wood made no mistake from the spot, sending keeper Mike Lewis the wrong way.

Barry were then dealt another blow, when Hood picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Marcus Day on the stroke of half time.

Penybont had been pushing harder in the first half, and they quickly took control in the second, when Dan Jeffries flicked a header past Lewis three minutes after the break.

Probably Barry's best chance came when Theo Wharton's powerful half-volley from the edge of the box fired straight into the hands of Bont keeper Ashley Morris.

Then with 77 minutes gone, Davies snuck in behind the Barry defence from the right-hand flank to drill home his second of the night.

Barry's misery was complete with two minutes of normal time left. Callum Sainty was dispossessed in midfield and the counter attack led to a close-range finish from Lewis Clutton.

Penybont climbed from second to fourth in the table, while Barry slip down to tenth, unable to extend the four-point gap with the drop zone.

The two sides meet again at Jenner Park next Friday night in the penultimate game of the first phase (7.45pm ko)
